The Spit at Homer, AK on The Long Ride North

imageTonight, Saturday, June 28th, 2014 finds us camped on the spit at Homer, Alaska on the last day of our Long Ride North. Tomorrow we turn around and start the Long Ride South. It’s ben a hell of a ride. Glad we came. We had a fitting seafood dinner at the Chart Room, Lands End Resort right on the end of the Homer Spit.

We allotted 30 days to do this and it really needed about 6 weeks. There just wasn’t time enough to do everything we wanted. No worries however. This was a ride for the journey and not the destination and that was accomplished…well, as of tonight, half of it has been accomplished. We still have half of it to go. So, since we are here on the Homer Spit, I should tell you all a little bit about it.

The Homer Spit is at the end of the Kenai Peninsula and is reported to be 4.5 miles long and  is the longest road in the world that juts out into the ocean. It is home to two ports, a deep water port and a shallow water port serving commercial and private boats and ships. On one side is the Cook Inlet and on the other is the Kachemak Bay.

Here is a picture from our campsite looking out over the Kachemak Bay side.

Yes, that’s a rainbow on the left and a glacier on the right. The tide is going out so that’s why there is so much beach. Here is a shot of our camp tonight.

imageFortunately there is a strip of grass between the gravel pads that we pitched our tent on. Hard to believe we are camped on the Homer Spit, Alaska tonight. What a treat. Thanks for tuning in and I’ll be in touch.
