The Matanuska Glacier, Alaska and Haines Junction, Yukon

Just finished up a couple of little 6×8 oil paintings from the Long Ride North this summer. The two latest additions to the collection are one of the Matanuska Glacier,  Alaska and the other is from Haines Junction, Yukon.

Matanuska-Glacier-6x8

The Matanuska Glacier is in Alaska on the Glenn Highway about 60 miles or so Northeast of Palmer, Alaska which is 45 miles or so from Anchorage. When we rode past it going toward Palmer I was sure hoping we would be able to stop and take some photos of it on the way out which was the case. Unfortunetaly it was a typical cloudy rather cool rainy sort of day but I got some great shots of it. Ideally I would liked to have stopped long enough to paint it on location but that was not possible. Besides I got to do this in the comfort of my studio.

Haines-Jct.-Sunset-6x8

This little painting is done from a photo that my brother-in-law Tim took. We were sitting on the deck at the washateria at the campground in Haines Junction, Yukon Territory, Canada. The sun was setting low in the sky and this peak was bathed in the orange glow. Stunning. I should mention that this was taken about 10:30 at night. That was a little hard to get used to, the fact that it never really got dark. It turned kind of like evening dusk or early morning twilight about 2:00 or 3:00AM and that was it for the night. Then it would start getting lighter again. Crazy.

Both of these are available. Contact me if you are interested.

Stay tuned and I’ll post some more as I get them done.
