Catching up on the Long Ride North

This morning I mentioned we should be in Prince George tonight. Well we didn’t quite make it. We are about 60 mile shy in a small town called Vanderhoof. I had to get an oil leak looked at in Smithers earlier and that set us back about an hour. All is good with the bike however. I got the oil changed while they had it. I have to say that the Harley dealer in Smithers, B.C. was exceptional. Not a very big dealer but the people were very friendly and very accommodating, getting me in on a moments notice and doing the service etc while we waited. I appreciate it very much.

So, I think I left you good folks while camped at Haines Junction, Yukon Territory where we had seen a bear just down the road from the camp. The guy posed no problem for us. We had a good night and had a good ride to Watson Lake, YT. Watson Lake is where we had been several days before and stopped at the Sign Forrest. I shot a video and took some pics. I may have posted that. I can’t remember and I’m too tired to look back and see. You’ll have to forgive me. Anyway, we stayed at the Air Force Lodge on the recommendation of a fellow motorcyclist who made this same trip a couple of years ago. Thanks Howie. Good tip. We also ate at Bee Jays Truck Repair, Towing and Cafe. Another recommendation from Howie and the host at the AF Lodge. This place requires a special mention. I don’t have a photo at the moment but when I get it I’ll post it. From the outside the place looks liked a closed down junk yard. You enter the building through the garage, turn left at the service counter and there is the cafe. The food was actually pretty good. The whole time we were there, mechanics walked through with tools or parts in hand, people came in to order parts or get information on repairs they were doing themselves. An unusual dining experience on the grand order of things for sure. You’ll have to go here to find out more about the Air Force Lodge but it is worth the look.

After we left Watson Lake Thursday morning we back tracked a bit to the turn off for the Stewart-Cassiar highway headed south. To begin with, it was raining, still and again, and the road was rather narrow and chip sealed rather than paved. It looked a little doubtful but we were committed. This road came highly recommended. We were not to be disappointed. We collectively saw a total of 10 bear and numerous other wildlife that I can’t recall at the moment. That’s the trouble when you go too long without posting. It gets hard to remember things. The scenery was without doubt the best we’ve had on the entire trip. The road was questionable in places and somewhat iffy but we made it. The weather was as extreme as the road conditions were. We had rain, hail, and sunshine. It was a day of memorable riding. That night we discovered the Bell 2 Lodge. This is a jewel in the wilderness. You can checkout the link for details but I’ll give you a hint. This is the worlds largest heli-skiing resort. The rooms were very luxurious and unique. Fabulous.

Friday morning we continued down the Stewart-Cassiar highway bound for Terrace, BC where we hoped to hook up with friends from Montrose, Colorado who were staying there camped on the Skeena River. I guess I mentioned that this morning. Before we got to Terrace, we took a side trip to Stewart and saw the amazing Bear Glacier and rode through the Great Bear Rain Forest. Here’s a shot of that.

IMG_2203 The camp at Terrance, last night was great. Deep in a forest with good friends and good food, on the banks of the Skeena River. As I had mentioned, Mark caught a couple of Sockeye that morning. Chantal had promised us if we came she would fix a salmon dinner. She delivered big time. Here is a picture of the of one of the salmon Mark caught. Teale Wood is holding it (checkout the forest behind her).He filleted it and skewered it on this device he made to cook over the fire with. It is a traditional way of cooking salmon and it sure worked good.

IMG_2214A feast it was. Thanks guys. It was good to see you and a fun evening.

So, it rained off and on today. We had planned to camp tonight but as we got closer to town, we decided to opt for a room as it had just rained rather heavily. The roads and the ground were soaked and we didn’t want to set up tents on wet ground. Besides, there was a chance for rain tonight as well.

I will leave you tonight with this parting shot.
