We Made to Alaska on the Long Ride North

Well, we made it to Alaska. Here’s the proof. It is a long road. 3261 miles from my door in Montrose, Colorado to the state line where we took this photo. The road from Destruction Bay, Yukon Territory to here was in pretty bad shape. We were warned of the frost heaves before we left Colorado. Then at the cafe at the motel this morning we were told that there were two sections of road where they were tearing it up to resurface it. One section was about 7 miles and the other was 18 miles. Dirt and gravel and it had been raining. The waitress said “good luck”. We set out with high anxiety for sure.

Yes the road was torn up and yes it was dirt and gravel and yes it had been raining but all-in-all it wasn’t too bad and we made it.  It continued to rain most of the morning and the frost heaves in the paved portions were pretty bad. Sure slowed things down.

We got into Tok, Alaska about 3 PM this afternoon. So far we have made no reservations and haven’t been disappointed. Today, however, our luck ran out. To our dismay, we found that there were no rooms available at any of the inns. We were looking for a room because it was raining and we didn’t want to set up tents in the rain. Over coffee and pie we looked for alternatives and not wanting to ride another 140 miles to the next town we decided that setting up tents would have to do.

We found the Sourdough Campground just outside of Tok. What a find. You can check them out right here from the comfort of your own home. Not long after we arrived, the rain let up and by the time supper was over, the skies parted and the sun came out. Funny how things just have a way of working out sometimes.

Tomorrow we are off to explore Alaska for a couple of days before beginning our return ride home. I’ll keep you updated as I can and thanks for tuning in. Mike out.

Yes we are Patrick. It’s been a hell of a ride. It’s taking a lot longer than we had figured so we have had to cut it short but it has been worth it none-the-less. Thanks for following along.

Yes, mostly good. There really hasn’t been any bad but the rain and road conditions have given use some ugly. Nothing we haven’t been able to handle however. Let’s book labor day and we’ll get together and tell you the tale.
