The North Pacific Cannery

Had a short day today, 215 miles. Rode from Terrace to Port Edwards to see the North Pacific Cannery. It is the oldest West Coast Cannery still standing. The North Pacific Cannery was established in 1889 and ceased operation in 1986. According to the brochures and various propaganda sources, the North Pacific Cannery was the largest and longest running cannery on the BC coast. Apparently, back in the day, there were hundreds, large and small canaries on the West Coast. This cannery is now a National Historic Site and consequently under preservation. I toured the buildings and walked the facility. This was really cool. Well worth the ride in itself. I only wish they had a video for purchase that showed the operation in it’s heyday but no such luck. I had lunch in the “mess hall” which consisted of salmon chowder and a salmon bun which is like a cinnamon bun without the sugar and cinnamon but rolled with salmon. Oh my! Needless to say, it was very good.

I got down to Prince Rupert but had trouble finding a warf or harbour as such. Found the loading lanes for the ferry however. Choices were either to Alaska or Seattle. I had to pause for  a couple of moments before I got into the exit lane. It was tempting to say the least. All looked pretty commercial. I guess I was looking for something like in Seward. If it was there I didn’t see it. I didn’t see any reason to hang around any longer so I headed back to Terrace stopping along the way to do a painting. That makes two for today, having done the first one in the AM on the way down to Prince Rupert. I’ll get them photographed and posted in the next day or two.

Got a room for tonight as I needed to do laundry and charge some batteries and do this post. The campground here in Terrace that I stayed in last night didn’t have any of those amenities. It looks like getting a room was a good decision as I just watched the weather forecast and there is a 90% chance of rain for tonight and for the next couple of days. Hmmm…that could put a damper on things. I had decided to skip going to Stewart/Hyder because a fella I was talking to in Rupert said there was a front moving in. I thought he was talking about Stewart/Hyder but apparently that included here too.

I’m eight days into this ride and unfortunately I have to think about heading back and allotting the remaining time to do some painting in Alberta too, so tomorrow I’ll start working in that direction. I’ve got a couple of stops in mind around here but I suppose the weather will determine what I do. Can’t afford to lay up here for the week and wait for the rain to pass as I need to start getting back. May just get wet which has happened before.

I’ll keep you posted. Mike out
