“Drama in the High Country” is the first of a series of paintings I am starting. Smaller plein air studies and photography will yield to larger more significant paintings done in the studio featuring the Colorado High Country, my backyard. The idea for these paintings was inspired by a video I watched in which Cory Trepanier, a Canadian artist, ventured into the Kluane National Park in Canada and painted studies on location and used these as a basis for large studio works. He filmed the adventure and was featured on the Canadian Public Television. Quite the story for sure. Consequently I am waiting with eager anticipation for the high country to open up so I can get up there and paint. I have painted the high country in the past but never have put a series of painting together over the course of the summer. Until the snow is off sufficiently to access the higher elevations, I will work on some studio paintings done from reference photos. This oil painting of Wilson Peak in the San Juan Mountains, near Telluride is 40×48 on a Belgian Linen panel.
